Building a Relay Team

A team of five runners will cover the entire 26.2 mile distance. The team members will run the same course as the Marathon field, under the Ekiden format (10K, 5K, 10K, 5K, 12.2K). Each runner will run one leg varying in distances between 3.10-7.58 miles handing off a timing chip to the next team member at each relay exchange zone. For example, the first runner may run 6.21 miles to the first exchange zone and that runner will hand off to the second team member who may run 3.1 miles and so on.
A team can have as few as three members competing; however, this will require that some team members run two consecutive legs. For example, if a team has only three members, the first runner may run the first two legs of the relay and the second runner may run the next two, while the third runner runs the final distance to the finish line. If a team has four members, one member must run two consecutive legs of the relay.

Numbers/Bibs

Team members must wear a number visible on their front. Team members must also wear a "RELAY" bib on their back.

Timing Chip

Each leg of the relay will be timed. For this, each team will be given one ChampionChip attached to a Velcro strap. This strap should be worn around the runner's ankle. The runner must cross over the timing pad near each relay exchange zone, remove the Velcro strap with the ChampionChip, and hand it off to the next runner. The next runner should attach the strap around his/her ankle before proceeding to the next exchange zone.
The timing computer can only read a chip that passes within a foot of the timing pad. If a runner does not want to wear the Velcro strap around his/her ankle, he/she must bend over and touch the chip to the timing pad at the exchange zone. Failure to pass the chip within a foot of or touch the timing pad could result in the runner not being timed for his/her leg or the team not being timed for the team relay.
The last runner of each team must wear the ChampionChip for scoring the overall team finishing time.

Relay Shuttle and Finish Information

Leg 1 - Take general shuttle buses (3rd & Market, 4th & Jefferson, 4th & Main) to the Start Area.  After completion of leg 1, board relay buses staged on Brookline at the corner of Southern Parkway and Brookline (1 block from Forum) and they will depart for 6th & Jefferson once bus is full.  6th & Jefferson is where relay participants can meet to participate in a team run in to the finish.

Leg 2 - Take general shuttle buses (3rd & Market, 4th & Jefferson, 4th & Main) to the Start Area.  This leg takes the general shuttle buses because the exchange zone is a short walk from the start of the race over to the exchange zone at Southern Parkway and Forum.  Relay participants for this leg are welcome to use the buses staged on Brookline for shelter purposes prior to running their leg, but keep in mind there is a short walk to the exchange zone.  After completion of leg 2, board relay buses on Central Ave between 3rd and 4th Street and they will depart for 6th & Jefferson once full.

Leg 3 - Take shuttle buses located at 6th and Muhammad Ali that will take you to 4th Street & Central Ave.  These buses depart for the exchange zone at 7:30 am.  After completion of leg 3, board relay buses on Eastern Parkway around the Daniel Boone Statue and they will depart for 6th & Jefferson once full.

Leg 4 - Take shuttle buses located at 6th and Muhammad Ali that will take you to Eastern Parkway near Cherokee Park. These buses depart for the exchange zone at 8:00 am.  After completion of leg 4, board relay buses on Everett Ave off of Grinstead and they will depart for 6th and Jefferson once full.

Leg 5 - Take shuttle buses located at 6th and Muhammad Ali that will take you to Grinstead Drive & Everett.  These buses depart for the exchange zone at 8:15 am.  This leg will be the person crossing the finish line with the chip.

It is highly recommended that teams use the shuttle buses.  You MUST have a race number on and it MUST be visible. If you do not have a number you will not be allowed on the bus.

It is important that team captains visit this site on a regular basis for changes and updates. Announcements, such as exchange location/maps, specific shuttle schedules and any other important information regarding the relays will be published as necessary.

Returning Relay Runners to the Finish

Shuttle buses will return near the Finish with relay runners who have completed their leg once a bus is full (or the last relay runner has completed the leg). Returning runners will be dropped off at 6th and Jefferson which is a couple blocks from the finish line. The race cannot guarantee that relay runners from the third and fourth exchange zones will be returned in time to meet fellow team members for a team run in to the finish.  If runners wish to return sooner than the bus is scheduled they will need to make their own transportation arrangements.

Relay Shuttle Buses as Shelter

The relay shuttle buses will remain at the relay exchange points to act as shelter for the relay runners. You may remain on the bus until it is time for you to exchange with your team member and run your leg.

Personal Items

The Derby Festival Marathon/miniMarathon will not be responsible for the movement of sweats or personal items of relay runners. It is up to each team to figure out how to pass on sweats and personal items. As with all Marathon and miniMarathon runners, all teams may check in bags at the start of the race. These items will be available near the finish at 4th and Market Street between Market and Jefferson Streets. DO NOT LEAVE PERSONAL ITEMS AT THE RELAY EXCHANGES, WE HAVE NO WAY OF INSURING THEIR SECURITY AND WILL NOT ASSUME ANY LIABILITY.
